Vaginal thrush is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of the Candida yeast. Common symptoms, including intense itching, burning, and discharge can be uncomfortable and disruptive - fortunately oral fluconazole offers a rapid, highly effective solution.

As a single-dose treatment, fluconazole capsules work internally throughout the body to stop the fungus from overgrowing, restoring a natural balance.

What Is Fluconazole, and How Does it Treat Thrush?

Fluconazole is an effective antifungal treatment sensitive against a wide range of fungi (broad spectrum). It is commonly prescribed across the UK for treating various fungal infections caused by the Candida species.

Belonging to the triazole family of medicines, fluconazole works by disrupting the cell structure of fungi, causing it to become unstable and die. This then allows the body’s natural defences to clear the remaining infection quickly.

If you would like to compare oral treatment against topical creams, read our detailed thrush treatment comparison guide.

Primary Uses of Oral Fluconazole

  • Vaginal Thrush - one-off or recurrent fungal infections of the vagina.

  • Balanitis - Fungal irritation, inflammation or redness on the head of the penis.

  • Oral Thrush - fungal infection of the mouth and mucous membranes.

  • Skin and Nail fungal infections - such as athlete’s foot and fungal nail infections.

  • Prophylaxis. Preventing recurrent thrush or other fungal infections in immunocompromised patients.

What Is The Dose Of Fluconazole For Thrush?

For acute, non-complicated vaginal thrush, the standard fluconazole dose is:

  • One capsule, containing 150mg of fluconazole, taken by mouth.

How To Take Fluconazole 150mg

  • Swallow the capsule whole, with a glass of water.

  • Take the dose with or without food, at any time of day.

  • Avoid chewing, crushing, or breaking the capsule.

For full clinical details and information on how to take fluconazole, please consult the fluconazole patient information leaflet included in the medication packaging.

How Long Does Fluconazole Take To Work?

After taking a tablet, the drug is quickly absorbed through to the bloodstream, reaching its maximum concentration within 1 to 2 hours.

  • First 24 to 48 hours. Most patients notice a significant reduction in itching, irritation and discharge.

  • 3 to 7 days. Within 7 days, all internal and external symptoms are usually resolved.

If, after 7 days, your symptoms show no sign of improvement, contact the clinicians at Quick Meds for further clinical assessment.

Do I Need a Second Dose of Fluconazole?

For the treatment of most yeast infections, a single dose of fluconazole is enough to completely eliminate the fungal overgrowth.

When To Take A Second Fluconazole 150mg Dose

  • Severe infections. If your initial symptoms were severe, a clinician may advise a second dose usually 3 days (72 hours) after the first.

  • Persistent symptoms. If symptoms do not change 7 days after your first treatment, a second dose may be prescribed following a medical re-evaluation.

  • Recurrent Thrush. If you experience more than 4 episodes of thrush in any 12-month period, you should speak to your GP to consider a suppressive fluconazole regime.

Importantly, you should never take a second dose without specific instruction from a qualified healthcare professional.

Is Fluconazole an Antibiotic?

No, fluconazole is not an antibiotic. Antibiotics target and kill bacterial infections whilst fluconazole, as an antifungal, is designed to destroy fungi.

Taking antibiotics for a fungal infection will not work and may worsen thrush symptoms by disrupting ‘good’ bacteria.

Who Can Take Fluconazole?

Fluconazole capsules can safely be taken by most adults, but are not suitable for everyone. Some patients may benefit from alternative treatments, such as clotrimazole cream.

Who Cannot Take Fluconazole?

Do not take oral fluconazole if:

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding

  • You are under 16 or over 60 years of age.

  • Have a history of hypersensitivity (allergy) to antifungals.

  • Suffer from severe liver, kidney or heart rhythm disorders.

  • Are taking medication which interacts with fluconazole (like erythromycin, pimozide, quinidine, or warfarin).
