Wegovy
Wegovy is a popular weight loss drug containing the active ingredient semaglutide. Up until now, it was available up to a maximum dose of 2.4mg, administered once-weekly.
Following regulatory approval in January 2026, a higher 7.2mg dose has been launched, targeting those individuals who could benefit from greater weight loss.
The new dose is available from Quick Meds, where GPhC-registered clinicians are on hand to help with your treatment needs.
Available in five dose strengths, patients start at the initiation dose of 0.25mg, administered once-weekly. This dose is then increased through 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg.
Doses are increased no sooner than every 4 weeks to allow the body to get used to the increased dose each time. Some patients find they do not need to increase as they have found a balance of weight loss against favourable tolerability.
Others need to continue to increase to benefit from greater appetite suppression, often reaching the maximum dose of 2.4mg.
At the maximum dose, if weight loss progress stalls, there's no room to go - until now. The new 7.2mg dose has been formulated specifically for those who could benefit from further weight loss and have tolerated treatment well.
Unlike with other doses, the new 7.2mg dose is approved specifically for use in weight management and not for type-2 diabetes.
The new 7.2mg dose is for patients currently on 2.4mg, who are no longer losing weight, having reached a plateau. It provides another dose option to people who have responded well to Wegovy but need a boost.
Before increasing, it's important to consider the impact of lifestyle changes. Without sustainable changes to diet or incorporating increased exercise, even at the 7.2mg dose, Wegovy may not work.
Both the 2.4mg and 7.2mg Wegovy doses are effective for weight loss, but 7.2mg leads to greater average weight loss.
In a clinical trial comparing both doses, patients showed an average loss of:
15.6% at the 2.4mg dose
18.7% at the 7.2mg dose
3.9% on placebo
Individuals taking 7.2mg were also more likely than those on a 2.4mg dose to lose up to 25% of their starting body weight.
However, it’s also important to know that people taking 7.2mg may have an increased risk of side effects, although these are generally mild.
Those who are actively losing weight on the 2.4mg dose, do not need to increase. An increased dose does not mean quicker weight loss though may increase the risk of side effects.
Additionally, those who are more likely to experience side effects upon a dose increase are recommended to maintain at the lower doses for longer.
As with all medications, Wegovy can cause side effects though not everyone gets them. These are most common upon initiation and with dose increases. Some patients report experiencing side effects more often on higher doses, but is this true of the 7.2mg dose?
The most common side effects include:
Headaches
Nausea and vomiting (being sick)
Diarrhoea or constipation
Stomach pain
Fatigue
Less common side effects include:
Dizziness
Pins and needles
Taste changes
Stomach inflammation
Acid reflux
Burping
Bloating
Gallstones
Injection site reactions
More serious side effects are much rarer and include:
Low blood sugar
Pancreatitis
Low blood pressure
Increased heart rate
Kidney/bladder stones
Rarely, individuals can experience a severe allergic reaction, requiring immediate medical attention.
The patient information leaflet contains a comprehensive list of side effects.
The 7.2mg dose carries a slightly higher risk of side effects, occurring in 70.8% of patients compared to 61.2% in those taking 2.4mg.
The original five doses, 0.25mg to 2.4mg exist as a FlexTouch pen, with each device containing four doses. Patients attach a new needle each week, dial a full dose and inject into their chosen injection site.
When the 7.2mg dose was initially approved in January 2026, the only way to administer it was to take three doses of 2.4mg in one sitting, using the existing 2.4mg device.
Since April 2026, a new single-dose device has been launched. A 7.2mg pack contains four pens, each containing a single dose. The needle is pre-attached and there is no dialling involved.
To inject a dose from the new device:
Remove the cap
Firmly press the pen against your injection site - this starts medication flow
The needle is enclosed in the pen, you will not be able to see this
The dose window slowly fills up with a yellow bar - once the yellow bar stops moving, your dose is complete
Remove the pen - this will automatically cover the needle
Replace the cap and dispose appropriately.
With the new device, it's important to firmly inject to activate medication flow. Additionally, ensure to not let go too early - if the pen is removed before the dose is complete, the needle will retract and you will not be able to inject the remainder.
It’s easy to switch between the doses as both contain the same medication. Be sure to speak to your provider for advice on switching.
Remember, you cannot start at the 7.2mg dose. The treatment is designed in a way where it must be started at the initiation dose and slowly increased - to allow the body to get used to treatment.
If you’re currently using 2.4mg but are stuck in your weight loss, get in touch with the team at Quick Meds - where our GPhC-registered prescribers will be happy to advise on switching.
Everything you need to know
No, a higher dose doesn’t speed up weight loss, but can help restart weight loss if your progress has stalled. If you’re actively losing weight at 2.4mg, you do not need to increase further, as this only increases the risk of side effects.
No, all eligible patients need to start at the initiation dose of 0.25mg, regardless of starting weight. This allows the body to safely adjust to treatment. Skipping these steps would increase the risk of side effects.
If the pen is removed too early, the needle will automatically retract and lock for safety. You will not be able to inject the remaining medication. Do not attempt to use another pen as you may have received a partial dose.
Yes, switching back down is straightforward as both strengths contain the same active ingredient.
