Wegovy is one of the most popular weight loss treatments - helping support long-term weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.
Up until recently, Wegovy was available up to a maximum of 2.4mg once weekly. In January 2026, the MHRA (the medicines regulator in the UK) approved a higher 7.2mg dose.
This new dose was designed to help those who had reached a weight loss plateau whilst on the previous maximum dose. This was to be administered using a 2.4mg pen, administering three doses in one sitting to make up the new dose.
As of April 2026, a single-dose pen has become available, easing administration, without the need for multiple injections. The new pen is disposable, containing a single dose in a single pen - differing from the device used for all other doses.
Read on to learn more about the new device and how to safely inject, getting your weight management treatment back in control.
The new 7.2mg device looks different from the KwikPen device you have been using for other strengths.
Before injecting:
Check the expiry date
Ensure the solution is clear, colourless and free of particles - do not use the pen if it is cloudy, frozen or contains particles
Wegovy is injected under the skin (subcutaneously). Suitable injection sites include:
Abdomen
Front of the thigh
Upper arm

In the box, you will find 4 pre-filled pens, each of which is preloaded with a single 7.2mg dose.
With the new device, the needles are already attached to the pen, hidden behind a needle cover. Compared to previous doses, you do not need to attach a needle or wind the pen to load a dose.

Remove the cap from the pen.
Press the pen firmly against your skin.
You will hear a click, indicating the injection has started
You will also notice a yellow bar moving through the pen window.
Do not lift the pen until the yellow bar has stopped moving.
Once you have removed the pen, a needle cover will automatically cover the needle, following which the pen can be discarded.
If the yellow bar does not start moving, you will need to press the pen more firmly against your skin.
It is important you do not lift the pen too soon. If you do, the needle will retract and you will not receive your full dose. This cannot be reversed.
After use:
Place the used Wegovy pen in an approved sharps container
Never reuse a single-use pen
Never dispose of your medicines via wastewater or household waste
Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
To get the best results from treatment:
Take your dose consistently every week
Proritise protein-rich foods
Stay hydrated
Take part in regular physical activity

Everything you need to know
Unlike lower doses (0.25mg to 2.4mg) that use a multi-dose pen, the 7.2mg strength uses a single-dose device. It comes with a needle already attached and hidden in the casing.
There's no dial to wind and no needle to attach, it is designed to be a simpler mechanism to deliver the higher dose all at once.
The new device is pressure-activated. If you haven't heard a click or can’t see the yellow bar, you probably aren’t pressing down hard enough. Without lifting the pen, increase the pressure firmly down to start the flow of medicine.
If you lift the pen too soon, the needle cover will automatically lock over the needle. You may not have received your full dose and now will not be able to administer the remainder as the needle cover cannot be retracted.
If this happens, do not administer a second dose, contact your healthcare provider for advice on how to manage your dose for that week.
Instead of counting, for the new pen you visually verify the dose is complete by making sure the yellow bar has completely filled the pen window.
Keep pressing the pen against your skin until the yellow bar stops moving. Following this, a full dose has been administered and you can lift the pen.
