Weight Loss
If you’re thinking about starting Wegovy or have recently started treatment, one of your first questions is probably: How quickly will I see results?
Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss treatment containing semaglutide. It is not a quick fix, but rather a long-term solution to be used alongside a reduced calorie-diet and increased exercise.
Read on to find out how long it takes for Wegovy to work and when you can expect to see results whilst on treatment.
All patients new to Wegovy must start at the initiation dose of 0.25mg, administered once-weekly.
The dose can be increased no sooner than every 4 weeks to allow your body to gradually adjust to the effects of the treatment.
Some patients find they do not need to increase each month. If you are experiencing positive results at a lower dose, you may stay on this dose for longer.
The initiation dose is 0.25mg followed by 0.5mg, 1mg and 1.7mg. The licensed maintenance doses are 2.4mg and the newly-approved 7.2mg doses.
At Quick meds, we monitor patients after each course of treatment to ensure you are getting the most out of your treatment, optimising your safety.
When you inject your first Wegovy dose, it starts working in the body almost immediately. Semaglutide reaches its peak concentration within 3 days after the injection.
Within the first 1-2 days, Due to how the medication affects receptors in the brain, you may notice a slight change in your appetite within the first 1-2 days. Additionally, you’ll start to feel:
Reduced food noise, fewer thoughts about snacking in between meals
Quicker feelings of fullness - as the stomach is taking longer to empty
Additionally, due to GLP-1 activation in both the gut and brain, you may notice side effects, particularly nausea. These are a sign the medication is working, are generally mild and resolve with time as your body gets used to the medication.
This is your time to start fine tuning lifestyle changes. Listen out for hunger cues, only eat if you feel the hunger and stop as soon as you feel full - resist the temptation to clean the plate.
At the same time, ensure you are making sensible food choices. A diet high in lean protein and fibre but low in carbohydrates, can work in tandem with the treatment, improving outcomes.
Remaining hydrated and doing regular exercise will also help maximise your results.
Whilst not classed as a therapeutic dose, 0.25mg is primarily used for tolerability and to reduce the risk of side effects. However, in STEP-1 trials, participants reported an average of 1-2kg weight loss within the first 4 weeks of treatment.
Whilst changes start to occur in the brain and gut within the first few days, meaningful weight loss occurs between 4-8 weeks (i.e. moving to the next dose).
The initiation dose (first four weeks) is intended to allow the body to adjust to treatment safely, rather than achieve meaningful weight loss. The current dose schedule titrates the treatment every 4 weeks to help your body build a tolerance to the medication:
Timeline | Dose | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
Weeks 1-4 | 0.25mg | Starter dose |
Weeks 5-8 | 0.5mg | Escalation dose |
Weeks 9-12 | 1mg | Escalation dose |
Weeks 13-16 | 1.7mg | Escalation dose |
Weeks 17+ | 2.4mg | Maintenance dose |
7.2mg | Higher Maintenance dose |
During the first 4 weeks, patients start the 0.25mg dose, administered once-weekly. This dose focuses on safe adjustment to treatment rather than significant weight loss.
At this dose, most patients experience mild to moderate side effects. These are a sign the treatment is working and the body is adjusting to life on the medication.
From week 5, you step up to 0.5mg, so long as you are getting on well with the treatment. At week 9, you can increase up to 1mg if needed.
During this time, you may notice more apparent weight loss, with clothes fitting looser and finding it easier to eat less and feel more in control of your diet.
Clinical data shows most patients lost about 5% of their initial weight by week 12. This is dependent on adherence to lifestyle changes and how well your body responds to treatment.
Some side effects may resurface as the dose increases, but these should subside again once your body adjusts to the higher dose.
By week 13, so long as you are tolerating treatment well, your Wegovy dose will increase further to 1.7mg at week 13 and then to 2.4mg from week 17.
Once at these higher doses, you can likely expect significant weight loss. This is again dependent on adherence to lifestyle modifications.
One study found patients taking 2.4mg of Wegovy ate 35% fewer calories at each meal.
Alongside a reduction in body weight, patients also notice a change in other health markers, such as blood pressure and energy levels.
A new, higher maintenance dose of Wegovy has recently been approved. At 7.2mg, this dose is designed to help patients who could benefit from further weight loss or who have reached a plateau whilst on the 2.4mg dose.
The proven weight loss motto is Less Calories in, More Calories Out. Wegovy helps with this by reducing appetite, leading to a reduced calorie intake. When this fine balance is not achieved, the result is a plateau.
Whilst common, there are adjustments you can make to reinvigorate your weight loss journey.
Some things you can do to help you through a plateau are:
Calorie deficit - your calorie intake at your new, lower weight will be lower than they were when you started.
Prioritise protein - to preserve lean muscle mass, keeping your metabolism running efficiently.
Add resistance training - to build muscle. This is the most effective way to address slow metabolism.
Wegovy is not a quick fix. Obesity is a chronic, long-term condition. Clinical evidence indicates Wegovy is designed for ongoing maintenance.
If treatment is stopped, hunger slowly returns as the medication leaves the body. At this point, some patients find they regain the lost weight unless they continue to adhere to the lifestyle modifications they implemented whilst on the treatment.
To maintain long-term weight loss, Wegovy is continued alongside lifestyle changes. Whilst there is currently no upper limit to how long a patient can be on treatment for, maintenance should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Your healthcare provider can offer advice on how to manage hunger cues, balancing this with side effects and the risk of reaching an unhealthily low weight.
Everything you need to know
It is normal to not experience significant weight loss during the first month of treatment. The initiation dose (0.25mg) is intended to allow the body to safely adjust on treatment.
Consistent weight loss begins at month 2 for most individuals.
Yes, whilst the standard titration schedule is to escalate all the way up to 2.4mg every 4 weeks, if you find a lower dose is providing optimum appetite suppression with manageable side effects, you may stay on a lower dose.
A plateau is common on Wegovy. It usually occurs when you are not in a calorie deficit.
As you get to a lower weight, your daily calorie intake reduces. To continue to see benefits, ensure your calorie intake is reduced in line with your new weight.
Additionally, incorporate resistance training to boost metabolism and promote calorie expenditure.
Obesity is a chronic, long-term condition. Many individuals find when they stop treatment, hunger cues return and so does weight gain.
Without continuing the diet and exercise habits you built whilst on treatment, weight regain is likely. Wegovy is licensed for weight maintenance and can be safely taken long term so long as it remains safe.
At Quick Meds, your safety and success are our priorities. We monitor each patient before dispensing your next dose.
Regular clinical reviews ensure you tolerate the medication well, optimising safety, and helps you get the most benefit.
