What is Crystacide Cream and How Does It Work?

Crystacide contains hydrogen peroxide - an effective antiseptic agent.

When applied to infected skin, the cream releases substances which disrupt the bacteria’s cell structure. This kills the bacteria, and stops it from replicating, effectively stopping the spread of the infection, allowing sores to dry, scab, and heal

As it is an antiseptic rather than an antibiotic, there is no risk of antibiotic resistance.

How to Apply Crystacide Cream: Dosage & Administration

Follow the below step-by-step instructions on how to correctly apply Crystacide, ensuring maximum effectiveness:

  1. Wash hands - wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before touching infected skin.

  2. Cleanse the skin - gently wash the sores with warm water and a mild soap to loosen crusts. Gently pat dry.

  3. Apply - apply a thin layer of cream directly onto the sores.

  4. Wash hands after use - wash hands thoroughly after use to avoid spreading the infection.

Crystacide is for external use only. Take care not to apply the cream on or near the eyes, inside the nostrils, mouth or mucous membranes.

Storage Recommendations

  • Store below 25℃ in a dry place, out of direct sunlight.

  • Discard within 28 days after first opening.

  • Do not use it after the expiry date.

  • Do not share medication with anyone else.

  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.

How Effective is Crystacide for Impetigo?

Crystacide is a clinically proven first-line therapy for mild impetigo. Most patients notice an improvement in symptoms, with a reduction in weeping, crust size and redness within 48 to 72 hours of regular application.

A treatment course lasts between 5 and 7 days. You should complete the full course to make sure the infection is completely cleared.

If there are no signs of improvement within 5 days, or if symptoms worsen, stop using the cream and contact the team for re-evaluation.

Who Shouldn’t Use Crystacide Cream?

Do not use Crystacide cream if you:

  • Are allergic to hydrogen peroxide or any of its inactive ingredients.

  • Have a severe, widespread infection covering large areas of your body.

  • Have deep, open wounds, animal bites, or severe skin burns.

  • Are treating lesions on or near the eyes, inside the mouth, inside the nostrils, or intimate areas.

  • Are seeking treatment for a child under 18.

At Quick Meds, we can only supply treatment to adults aged 18 years and over. For parents seeking treatment for a child aged 1+, you can access free in-person advice under the NHS Pharmacy First Scheme.

Side Effects of Crystacide Cream

Whilst Crystacide is tolerated well by most patients, some may experience localised skin reactions. Some people feel mild burning for a short time after applying. The cream contains propylene glycol and salicylic acid, which can cause skin irritation in some people

If you experience any of the following symptoms, wash the cream off the affected skin immediately, stop using the cream and seek immediate medical attention via NHS 111 or A&E:

  • Severe swelling

  • Painful blistering

  • Signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, hives)

Interactions & Things to Avoid

Crystacide has no known interactions with any medications, health supplements or contraceptives. However, it is sensitive to some substances:

  • Avoid applying other creams, skin products or iodine-containing antiseptics to the same area at the same time - this may deactivate hydrogen peroxide.

  • Hydrogen peroxide can bleach coloured fabrics or hair. Take extra care when applying near clothing or hairline.

What Are the Alternatives to Crystacide?

  • Fucidin 2% Cream - containing fusidic acid. A prescription-only antibiotic cream ideal for weeping, moist lesions, or non-responsive to antiseptic treatment.

  • Fucidin 2% Ointment - containing sodium fusidate. Another prescription treatment formulated in a greasy base, ideal for dry, heavily crusted impetigo to soften stubborn scabs.
