Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition in women's health, yet many are unsure how to recognise and treat it.
When your body's natural balance is disrupted, even everyday activities can be uncomfortable. Treatments like Zidoval gel are designed to target the infection and restore vaginal health. Here is everything you need to know.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition which occurs when there is an overgrowth of ‘bad’ bacteria which outnumbers the vagina’s natural ‘good’ bacteria. This imbalance disrupts the natural pH of the vagina.
Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include:
An unusual vaginal discharge that has a strong fishy smell, particularly after sex
A change in the colour and consistency of your discharge - it may become greyish-white, thin and watery
Zidoval gel is used to treat BV. It contains an active ingredient called metronidazole, which is an antibiotic. Zidoval kills the harmful bacteria helping to restore the natural pH of the vagina.
Before starting treatment with any medication, always read the patient information leaflet.
Good hygiene whilst using Zidoval is very important. Always:
Wash your hands before opening the tube or touch the applicators
Use a fresh applicator for each dose
Immediately throw away each used applicator in a waste bin
How to use:
Remove the cap from the tube and use the pointed end of the lid to pierce the opening of the tube
Screw the open end of the applicator onto the opening of the tube.
Squeeze the tube gently and slowly from the bottom to fill the applicator - the plunger will move as the applicator fills and will stop moving when it holds the required 5g dose
Remove the applicator and replace the cap on the tube
Hold the filled applicator by the barrel and and insert into the vagina as far as it will comfortably go
Slowly push the plunger down to release the gel into your vagina - this may be easiest to do lying on your back with your knees apart
Press the plunger until it stops
Remove the applicator from the vagina and discard it immediately.
You will need to repeat this procedure for 5 consecutive days.
If you do not feel better after a full 5-day course, get in touch with your prescriber.
Like all medicines, Zidoval can cause some side effects.
The most common are:
Headache and dizziness
Vomiting
Stomach cramps
A metallic taste in your mouth or a furry tongue
Serious side effects are rare, but seek immediate medical attention if:
Your skin or the whites of your eyes go yellow - this can be a sign of liver or gallbladder problems
You get unexpected infections, mouth ulcers, bruising, bleeding gums or extreme tiredness - this can be a sign of a blood problem
You experience severe stomach pains which spread to your back - this could be a sign of pancreatitis
You have blurred or double vision
Drinking alcohol while using metronidazole can make you:
Feel or be sick
Become confused
Have a headache
Have an abnormally fast heartbeat
If this happens, stop drinking alcohol and contact your prescriber.
Although Zidoval is used in the vagina, these side effects may occur. Stop drinking alcohol if this happens.

Everything you need to know
You may notice an improvement in your symptoms within 2-3 days. However, it is important that you complete the course, even if you start to feel better sooner.
It is generally recommended to avoid sex until your symptoms have cleared and you have completed treatment. The gel may also reduce the effectiveness of latex condoms and diaphragms.
If you miss a dose, use the gel as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, skip the dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Yes, BV can come back after treatment. If your symptoms return soon after treatment or return regularly, see your GP.

Some people do get thrush after taking a course of antibiotics like metronidazole. This is more common if you are using a vaginal gel.
Antibiotics kill the normal harmless bacteria that normally protect you from thrush.
