Wegovy
The weight loss drug Wegovy has been getting a lot of publicity recently. But what is it?
Wegovy is a prescription medicine made by Novo Nordisk and approved for long-term weight management in people who meet specific criteria. It contains semaglutide, a medicine that helps reduce appetite and improve blood sugar control - making you feel fuller, quicker and for longer.
Because Wegovy is in high demand and can be quite expensive, counterfeiters create fake versions to sell online through unauthorised sellers. These products may contain:
Too little, too much or none of the active ingredient (semaglutide)
Unsafe substances or contaminants
Improperly stored ingredients that may not work
Counterfeit medicines can cause serious health problems and may not have any benefits for weight loss.
Identifying authentic medication is important and will help to keep you safe and your wallet happy.
Genuine Wegovy should:
Be supplied in sealed manufacturer packaging - Novo Nordisk are the only current manufacturers of Wegovy
Show a clear expiration date and batch number
Include labelling from a registered licensed pharmacy - this label usually includes the name of the medication, your name, directions for use and the date it was dispensed
Match the dose prescribed by your healthcare provider
Be supplied as a pre-filled injection pen - the coloured label should vary depending on the strength
Warning signs of a possible counterfeit include:
Blurry printing or misspelled words
Unusually low price - it if is too good to be true, it probably is
Damaged or previously opened packaging
Absence of an online consultation form
A request for payment via a bank transfer
Medication that requires reconstitution or is supplied as vials
If anything looks unusual, do not use it until you have confirmed with a pharmacist/doctor or appropriate healthcare professional.
When you know what to look out for, it's easier to tell the difference between reputable online pharmacies and a dodgy online supplier.
The safest places to obtain Wegovy are:
Your local pharmacy
A reputable registered online pharmacy
Your GP
Avoid buying from:
Social media sellers
Beauty salons or gyms
Online marketplaces
Websites that do not require you to have a medical consultation
Safe online pharmacies will always require a valid prescription for prescription medications like Wegovy. All UK pharmacies must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). The requisite registration information must be prominently displayed and clear to verify for all website users.
Wegovy is a 'prescription-only medication' which means it must be prescribed specifically for you by a qualified prescriber and subsequently dispensed by a pharmacy. Sometimes this can be the same organisation; such as with Quick Meds, we are the prescribing and dispensing organisation.
If you are offered Wegovy via any means which does not include a consultation or a prescription, exercise caution as these may be counterfeit medicines. Obtaining medication outside of the legitimate supply chain such as via social media channels including Facebook and Instagram is illegal and should be avoided.
Be cautious of websites offering Wegovy at significantly lower prices, as this could be a red flag for dangerous counterfeit medicines. Try to avoid websites that have few reviews, that look suspicious or unofficial, or that offer medications without a prescription. Never buy medicines from social media.
If you're unsure of the website/source, you should be able to call them via landline number and speak to a real person; be cautious of websites advertising mobile numbers or where contact information is difficult to find.
Health authorities and individual healthcare professionals both have a responsibility to protect patients from fake medicines.
Healthcare professionals help protect patients by:
Ensuring Wegovy is safe and appropriate for you before sending you the medication
Writing a legitimate prescription
Monitoring side effects and progress
Ensuring medication comes from licensed suppliers
Teaching you how to use the medication correctly
Having a consultation with your prescriber is important, as this is when a clinician will assess your medical history thoroughly, including any other medications you may take. This helps to prevent any interactions and side effects.
Falsified prescriptions can be purchased online, but a pharmacy can check whether a prescription is legitimate. If you are in doubt, a pharmacist can phone the prescriber and double-check.
Falsified medicines don't go through any of the usual checks that prescription drugs do. A BBC investigation found that most of the fake Wegovy that they tested either contained a much lower dose of semaglutide, or none at all! With fake medication, you're less likely to achieve your desired weight loss results, as you're often not getting the correct dose.
If the medicine contains more active ingredient than you are aware of, you may end up taking too much Wegovy.
Whilst it's bad enough that counterfeit versions of Wegovy may not help you lose weight, they can also negatively affect your health. Illegal medication isn't tested for safety and can be dangerous - it can contain anything from laxatives to rat poison.
Counterfeit Wegovy may cause:
Severe nausea or vomiting
Low blood sugar, especially if the product contains other active ingredients such as insulin
Infection from contaminated ingredients
Hospitalisation or life-threatening complications
It's also illegal to buy drugs online without a prescription. You may face criminal charges.
If you believe you've received counterfeit Wegovy, it's important to report it to the right people. This helps regulatory authorities (like the MHRA) take action to prevent others from danger. They may want to investigate further and take legal action to shut down the supplier.
By reporting fake medicines, you're also helping to raise public awareness about the dangers of counterfeit drugs. This can help prevent others from being harmed by fake Wegovy.
If you suspect your Wegovy is fake:
Stop using it immediately
Contact your pharmacist or doctor
Report it to the MHRA via the yellow card scheme and report the online seller using the advice on this MHRA page
Seek urgent medical attention if you feel unwell
Counterfeit trends are constantly evolving, with counterfeiters adapting to new technologies and consumer behaviours. It's important to stay informed about these changes so you know what to look out for, and how to report any concerns.
The following resources can help keep you updated on how to spot a Wegovy fake:
The yellow card scheme for reporting fake medicines
The European Medicines Agency information on Wegovy, including news updates
You can also contact your local pharmacy or speak with one of our clinicians here at Quick Meds by calling 0121 628 5318.
Wegovy can be an effective treatment for weight management when prescribed and supplied through legitimate healthcare channels. To protect your health:
Never purchase your medication from social media or unverified websites
Only buy from licensed pharmacies
Consult your healthcare provider is anything seems unusual
Check packaging carefully
Report suspected counterfeit products promptly
Taking these steps help to ensure your medication is safe, effective and genuine.
