Viridal Duo is a prescription only treatment containing alprostadil. As an injectable, it is administered directly into the penis to help with erectile dysfunction.
Alprostadil improves blood flow to the penis which can help achieve and maintain an erection.
Before using the Viridal Duo starter pack, a medical professional must show you how to use the injections. You need this training before you can use them at home.
Viridal Duo is available in 3 strengths, 10mg, 20mg and 40mg and comes in a glass cartridge with two chambers:
One contains alprostadil, the drug
The other contains sodium chloride solution.
When combined, they create an injection-ready solution for intracavernosal injection (injecting into the shaft of the penis).
The alprostadil injection works as a vasodilator, i.e it opens blood vessels, increasing blood flow into the spongy tissue of the penis, where it is held, leading to an erection.
Erections happen because of blood flow. The blood vessels in the penis need to expand and let in more blood to cause and maintain an erection.
Unlike common ED tablets, such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis), sexual stimulation is not required for Viridal Duo to work.
The penis's blood vessels enlarge and fill with blood when a man is sexually aroused due to nerve signals. This causes the penis to become hard by filling the corpora cavernosa, two chambers in the penis.
The blood arteries must be healthy and able to transport enough blood for this process to function. A restricted flow of blood or injury to the blood vessels might make it difficult to achieve or sustain an erection.
Viridal Duo has shown a high level of effectiveness. Clinical trial data over a six-month study shows men were able to engage in sexual activity after 94% of injections.
87% of men reported a “satisfactory” experience after using the treatment, which proved effective regardless of the underlying cause of ED.
The data shows, due to its local administration directly to the penis, Viridal Duo offers an advantage over traditional oral treatments in that
It does not require patients to be sexually stimulated to work
It works regardless of the cause - particularly useful for men who suffer from psychological ED.
Before starting treatment at home, it's important to have a thorough consultation with a healthcare professional who can show you how to use it and determine the safest starting dose for you.
The injection should be administered into the shaft of the penis at least 10-15 minutes before anticipated sexual activity. Sexual stimulation is not required. You shouldn’t use Viridal more than once in 24 hours or more frequently than 2-3 times a week. If you use more than you should, this runs the risk of severe side effects.
Always double check the dose you are taking and follow the instructions given to you by your prescribing clinician. Most men need 10 to 20 micrograms for each injection. Always follow your clinicians dosage instructions on the label. You must not use more than 40 micrograms in one injection.
The packaging contains the Easy-duo injector, injection needles and the Viridal cartridge which contains the drug and saline. Ensure to check the injector for damage and ensure you have the correct dose vial prior to use.
To inject:
Prepare the needle - remove its seal and attach it to the injector, twisting to tighten
Prepare the cartridge - clean the cartridge tip with an alcohol swab then insert into the injector by unscrewing the plunger. Screw the plunger back on.
Mix the solution - pointing the injector up, push the plunger until the grey stoppers meet then shake gently until the solution becomes clear.
Remove air bubbles - tap the injector vigorously to bring bubbles to the top then push the plunger to release a drop of solution.
Set the dose - move the plunger upward until the grey stopper has reached the prescribed dose.
Prepare the injection site - clean and let dry.
Inject the dose - hold level and inject needle straight into injection site. Slowly inject the dose over 5-10 seconds.
After injecting - Remove the needle. Apple pressure to site if bleeding occurs
Wait for erection - It should occur within 5-15 mins.
Full usage instructions can be found on the manufacturer's patient information leaflet including with the medication.
The erection should last for one hour. If it lasts between 2-4 hours, contact your clinician and if it lasts for longer than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention.
As with any medication, Viridal can cause side effects though not everyone gets them. In clinical trials, 50% of men experienced pain in the penis, though this was mild.
Other common side effects include:
Burning sensation during injection
Pain at the injection site
Lumps at the injection site or in your penis after long-term use
Spot-like bruising (blood spots under the skin) at the injection site
A fluttering sensation due to uncontrollable muscle movement
Erections might occur more often and longer in duration
Bend or kink in the penis, especially after long-term use
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:
A painful erection lasting more than 4 hours
Serious allergic reactions which cause difficulty in breathing or dizziness
Skin reactions such as rashes and blistering
For a full list of side effects, please read the patient information leaflet.
Do not use Viridal Duo if you:
Are allergic to alprostadil or any of the other ingredients in Viridal Duo.
Have a penile implant
Have recently had a heart attack/stroke and been advised not to have sex
Have a condition that makes you more susceptible to developing priapism such as:
Sickle cell anaemia
Leukaemia (blood cancer)
Multiple myeloma (bone cancer)
Have scarring or deformity of the penis (angulation, cavernosal fibrosis)
The injection should not be used alongside other ED treatments such as PDE-5 tablets (sildenafil, tadalafil).
Before using Viridal Duo, it's crucial to inform the doctor about all of your medical history and all the medications you are currently taking to ensure the treatment is safe for you.
An erection can occur 10 to 15 minutes after injecting Viridal Duo into the penis and usually lasts for about one hour.
If the erection lasts for between 2-4 hours, speak to your clinician as your dose may need to be adjusted.
If it lasts for more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention - go to hospital right away.
Viridal Duo injections are indicated for use by men over 18 who suffer from erectile dysfunction. They must not be used by women, children or the elderly (over 80 years).
If you haven't tried any treatments for erectile dysfunction, we recommend starting with one of our first-line treatments, such as: Viagra (Sildenafil) Cialis (Tadalafil), Spedra or vardenafil.
If you cannot take tablets for any reason, topical treatments may be better suited such as Vitaros cream. This contains the same active ingredient as Viridal Duo (alprostadil) and is applied directly to the penis opening.
If you take other medications, you should check suitability with a healthcare provider. Viridal Duo can interact with common painkillers such as ibuprofen, blood thinners and antidepressants.
You can buy Viridal from our clinic at Quick Meds. As a prescription only medication, you need to complete an online questionnaire before purchasing. This asks about your symptoms, your medical history and if you are taking any other medication.
Our UK registered prescribers review the form to ensure the treatment is safe before approving.
Importantly, patients must have been shown how to use the injection by a healthcare provider. This will be assessed during the consultation process.
As a GPhC registered pharmacy, Quick Meds offers evidence based advice and treatments which are regulated by the MHRA.
As part of the regulatory requirements, each private prescription issued is reviewed by pharmacists and prescribers trained to provide the highest standard of service.
Once approved, we pack your product using discreet packaging and deliver to most UK based addresses using tracked delivery methods. We offer delivery options as soon as by the next working day following approval.
Everything you need to know
The decision between tablets and injections is a personal one. Injectable treatments do not require sexual stimulation to work like tablets do. Additionally, drug absorption difficulties that may arise with some tablets are also resolved by injectables.
However, the injection requires a technique which is not as simple as swallowing a tablet.
No, Viridal injections help you to produce an erection without sexual stimulation required.
Viridal Duo must be injected once a day maximum and should not be used more than three times a week.
An erection should last up to 1 hour. If it lasts between 2-4 hours, contact your clinician and if it lasts for longer than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention.
Viridal starts to work immediately and can help achieve an erection within 5-15 minutes.
Speak to your clinician who can safely adjust the dose. Do not adjust the dose without speaking to a healthcare professional first.
The injection does not generally hurt though some may experience some slight discomfort upon injecting or a sharp scratch when the needle is inserted.
Viridal Duo injections are available on the NHS but access is restricted to patients who meet a set criteria.
No, you should not combine treatments. Using them together significantly increases the risk of serious side effects, such as priapism - a painful, long-lasting erection.
