What is Sildenafil 50mg

Sildenafil 50mg is the usual recommended dose of sildenafil for treating erectile dysfunction (ED). It is a prescription-only medicine taken when needed before sex. At Quick Meds, you can request sildenafil 50mg by completing an online consultation, which a prescriber will review to determine if this treatment and dose suit you.

At a glance

  • The usual recommended dose of sildenafil for most men with ED

  • 74% of men taking 50mg sildenafil reported improved erections in clinical trials

  • Taken when needed, around an hour before sex

Who is Sildenafil 50mg for?

Sildenafil 50mg is the usual recommended dose for adults with erectile dysfunction.

Most men starting treatment for the first time will be prescribed 50mg. Your dose can be increased to 100mg sildenafil or reduced to 25mg sildenafil depending on how well the 50mg dose works for you and if you experience side effects.

Some men with certain health conditions or who take specific medicines that interact with sildenafil may start treatment on a lower dose. Your prescriber will decide the right starting dose for you during your online consultation.

How effective is Sildenafil 50mg?

In clinical trials, 74% of men with erectile dysfunction found sildenafil 50mg improved erections. That makes 50mg an effective dose for most men, and one of the reasons it is the usual starting strength.

How well sildenafil works varies from person to person. Taking it correctly and allowing enough time for it to work can help you get the most from your treatment, and sexual stimulation is needed for sildenafil to work. If the 50mg dose isn’t working for you, your prescriber may recommend increasing your dose.

How to take Sildenafil 50mg

Take one sildenafil 50mg tablet 30 to 60 minutes before sex. Swallow the tablet whole with water and do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.

Only take the strength and number of sildenafil tablets prescribed for you. If sildenafil 50mg does not give enough effect, or causes side effects you find difficult, speak to a prescriber about increasing or decreasing your dose rather than changing it yourself.

Sildenafil 50mg compared with the other strengths

Sildenafil is available in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg strengths. Most men first starting treatment will begin with 50mg sildenafil, but this can be increased to 100mg or reduced to 25mg depending on your overall health and how you respond to the medication.

Sildenafil 100mg

  • nitric oxide donors, such as recreational “poppers” (amyl nitrite)

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

Is 50mg of sildenafil a strong dose, and is it enough?
+−

Sildenafil 50mg is the middle of the three available strengths (25mg, 50mg and 100mg) and the usual recommended dose for treating ED. In clinical studies, 74% of men taking 50mg sildenafil reported improvements in erections.

If 50mg does not work well, speak to your prescriber about whether the stronger 100mg sildenafil or another treatment may suit you more.

Sildenafil 50mg or 100mg: what's the difference?
+−

Sildenafil 50mg is the usual recommended dose, while 100mg is the maximum recommended dose. Your prescriber may increase your dose to 100mg if 50mg does not work well enough and you aren’t experiencing side effects.

How long does sildenafil 50mg last, and when should I take it?
+−

Sildenafil 50mg can help with erections for up to around 4 hours after taking your tablet. You won’t have an erection for 4 hours, but sildenafil will make it easier for you to get an erection during this timeframe when you are sexually stimulated. You should take it around 1 hour before sex to allow time for sildenafil to start working.

Can I take two sildenafil 50mg pills?
+−

Only if your prescriber has specifically told you to. Taking two sildenafil 50mg tablets together gives a 100mg dose, which is the maximum dose of sildenafil. However, if you have been prescribed 50mg, do not double your dose yourself if it doesn’t work well enough. Speak to your prescriber first, so they can assess whether a stronger dose is suitable.

Sildenafil 50mg or tadalafil 20mg: which is right for me?
+−

Sildenafil and tadalafil are both oral treatments for erectile dysfunction, and the main difference is how long their effects last. Sildenafil works for up to around 4 hours, whereas tadalafil works for up to 36 hours. Your prescriber can help you decide which medicine and at what dose is right for you.

Can I drink alcohol with sildenafil 50mg?
+−

Yes, you can drink alcohol while taking sildenafil 50mg. However, drinking a lot of alcohol can make it harder to get an erection and may reduce the benefit you get from sildenafil. It is best to keep alcohol intake low when you plan to take sildenafil.
