How does it work?

• Dose: One capsule taken twice daily - usually in the morning and evening.

Tips For Taking Nitrofurantoin Safely

• Take with or after food. The most common reported side effect is nausea. Taking the capsules with a meal improves absorption whilst protecting the stomach.

• Space doses evenly. Aim to take your doses roughly 12 hours apart to maintain a steady concentration of antibiotic in your urine.

• Complete the full course. Even if your symptoms start to clear. Stopping an antibiotic course early allows some bacteria to survive, causing re-infection and antibiotic resistance.

• Adequate hydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush bacteria out.

• Urine discoloration. Nitrofurantoin can turn urine dark yellow or brown. This is a harmless and temporary side effect.

How Long Does Nitrofurantoin Take To Work

Nitrofurantoin begins to work within the first few hours after a dose, however, most people notice symptom improvement within 24-48 hours.

Although symptoms improve quickly and you may feel better after just a day of taking the antibiotics, it is important that you complete the entire course to help clear the infection and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

If your symptoms get worse, or do not improve after the three day course, or return soon after treatment needs, speak with your prescriber.

If symptoms do not improve after the three day course, worsen at any point or return after finishing the treatment, speak to your prescriber right away. This could be a sign that the bacteria causing symptoms are resistant to this treatment.

How Does Nitrofurantoin Compare To Trimethoprim

In the UK, nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim are the two primary oral antibiotics used to treat lower UTIs.

Whilst both are highly effective treatment options, they belong to different classes of antibiotics and work in different ways.

As antibiotic resistance with trimethoprim has increased, prescribers prefer prescribing nitrofurantoin as the default option. However, a prescriber may decide to prescribe trimethoprim instead if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin, have severe kidney disease or urine culture testing confirms this is the right option.

As with any medicine, nitrofurantoin can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them.

• Nausea or vomiting

• Headaches.
