Skinoren cream is a topical treatment containing azelaic acid and is used to manage mild to moderate acne on the face, chest, or back. It works by killing acne-causing bacteria, unclogging pores and normalising skin cell turnover.

By unclogging pores and preventing a dead skin cell build-up, Skinoren clears blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed spots. It also plays a role in helping to fade hyperpigmentation and dark marks left by acne breakouts.

In the UK, Skinoren is a prescription-only medicine (POM) and cannot be purchased over the counter. It is applied twice daily as part of a structured acne care plan.

What Is Skinoren And How Does it Work?

Skinoren is a topical cream which targets acne through three main actions:

  • Antibacterial. It reduces the amount of Cutibacterium acnes bacteria, which are responsible for spot inflammation.

  • Keratolytic. It exfoliates the skin, preventing dead skin cells from clogging hair follicles.

  • Anti-inflammatory. It calms red, painful spots, papules, and pustules.

Fading Acne Marks And Hyperpigmentation

Azelaic acid, unlike other acne treatments, inhibits a chemical responsible for melanin production (the substance that gives colour to the skin, hair and eyes). In doing so, Skinoren helps to fade the dark spots left after a pimple heals (hyperpigmentation) and improves overall skin tone.

How To Use Skinoren: Application And Administration

Apply Skinoren cream twice daily, in the morning and evening, follow the below step-by-step instructions:

  1. Cleanse. Wash the affected area with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser and pat completely dry.

  2. Apply. Apply a thin layer of cream over the entire affected area (not just to individual spots). A fingertip unit covers the whole face. Avoid the eyes, nostrils, lips, and open wounds.

  3. Wash hands. Wash hands thoroughly after applying.

Application Adjustments & Missed Doses

If you have sensitive skin, which is prone to irritation, your clinician may advise to start by applying only once daily for the first week, before increasing to twice daily use.

If you forget to apply the cream, skip the missed dose and apply your next dose at the scheduled time. Do not apply extra cream to make up for a missed dose.

Most patients notice improvements within 4 weeks. Treatment is usually continued for several months, up to a maximum of 12 months under clinician guidance.

Storage Recommendations

  • Store below 30°C in its original container with the cap tightly sealed.

  • Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

  • Do not use it after the expiry date.

Side Effects Of Skinoren

As the cream is applied externally, very little of the drug enters the bloodstream. For this reason, Skinoren is generally well tolerated, though local skin reactions may still occur, especially during the first few weeks of treatment as your skin adjusts. These are summarised in the table below:

Frequency

Side Effects

How to manage

Common (Up to 1 in 10)

At the application site: Burning Stinging Dryness Itching Redness

Apply an oil-free non-comedogenic moisturiser 15 minutes after Skinoren.

Uncommon (Up to 1 in 100)

Reduce application to once daily or take a 2-day break before restarting.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, wash your face immediately, stop using the cream and seek immediate medical attention by calling 999 or visiting A&E:

  • Severe swelling

  • Painful blistering

  • Signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, hives)

Precautions & Medical Disclosure

Whilst generally safe for most individuals, it is important to disclose all information to your prescriber - this allows for a more comprehensive medical evaluation. Inform your prescriber during your consultation if you have:

  • Asthma. Azelaic acid has rarely been reported to worsen asthma symptoms

  • Sensitive skin conditions. Eczema, rosacea, or active dermatitis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

How long will a 30g tube of Skinoren Cream last?
+−

When applied twice daily to the face, a 30g tube typically lasts 3 to 4 weeks.

Can Skinoren be used for dark spots or rosacea?
+−

Whilst the active ingredient is effective for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and rosacea, at Quick Meds, we prescribe Skinoren online specifically for acne vulgaris. Consult your GP for rosacea-specific care.

Can I use Skinoren alongside other acne products?
+−

You should avoid combining Skinoren with other products, particularly physical exfoliants, alcohol-based toners or other strong treatments (like glycolic or salicylic acid) unless directed by your prescriber, as this increases irritation.

Does Skinoren cause sun sensitivity?
+−

Unlike retinoids, Skinoren does not cause photosensitivity, but irritated skin is more susceptible to UV damage.  Always apply a daily sunscreen (SPF 30+) to prevent hyperpigmentation from darkening.

What should I do if my skin burns after applying Skinoren?
+−

A mild tingling or burning is initially common. If uncomfortable, reduce application to once daily, or apply moisturiser first as a buffer.

If severe burning or swelling occurs, wash off the cream and contact your prescriber.
