Serious side effects and when to get urgent help

Serious side effects are rare, but stop taking lymecycline and call a doctor or call 111 now if:

  • you have dark pee, the whites of your eyes turn yellow or your skin turns yellow (this may be less obvious on brown or black skin) – this can be a sign of liver problems.

  • your skin becomes very sensitive to the sun.

Signs of serious allergic reactions, which require urgent emergency services contact include:

  • swelling of the face, tongue or throat or difficulty swallowing.

  • Severe diarrhoea or abdominal pain.

  • Severe skin reactions or blistering.

  • you're breathing very fast or struggling to breathe (you may become very wheezy or feel like you're choking or gasping for air)

  • your skin, tongue or lips turn blue, grey or pale (if you have black or brown skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet)

  • you suddenly become very confused, drowsy or dizzy

  • someone faints and cannot be woken up

Antibiotic resistance and responsible acne treatment

Antibiotic resistance for Lymecycline occurs when the C. acnes bacteria (the primary bacteria involved in acne development) evolve mechanisms to withstand the effects of the antibiotic, rendering Lymecycline less effective or completely ineffective at treating acne. This is a significant concern, especially with long-term use for acne treatment.

  • It is thus important to:

    • Take Lymecycline exactly as prescribed.

    • Not to share antibiotics with others.

    • Not to use antibiotics for longer than advised.

  • To reduce antibiotic resistance, Lymecycline is ideally combined with a topical gel application medication also to treat acne. This ensures a broad spectrum of medication treatment to reduce acne and prevent excessive or longer use of antibiotics.

Follow-up and reviews

Acne treatment with Lymecycline is usually reviewed after 8 to 12 weeks.

If the patient does not find the treatment has improved their acne or they have had unwanted side effects, they can have a telephone consultation to discuss there next best options for treatment. This will be with a Pharmacist or Prescriber.
