Famotidine belongs to a group of medicines called H2 receptor blockers which help to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. In doing so, it can be used to treat
Heartburn and acid reflux- known also as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GORD
Stomach and duodenal ulcers
Erosive oesophagitis (inflammation or damage to the oesophagus)
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a rare condition causing high acid levels)
Famotidine provides fast, lasting relief from burning sensations and discomfort associated with excess stomach acid.
Famotidine works by blocking H2 receptors in the stomach lining. When activated, these H2 receptors normally signal the stomach to produce acid, used for digestion. Famotidine reduces the amount of stomach acid produced and this helps relieve symptoms such as:
Burning or pain in the chest (heartburn)
Sour taste or regurgitation
Bloating or discomfort caused by acid reflux
By reducing acid production, famotidine helps heal the stomach lining which in turn helps ulcers heal and prevent them from returning.
The following are benefits Famotidine offers for people experiencing acid reflux and excessive stomach acid production:
Provides rapid and effective relief from heartburn and acid reflux
Can help treat stomach ulcers and prevent them from coming back
Decreases stomach acid production at night, which improves sleep quality and comfort
Suitable for short-term and long-term use under medical supervision
Available in 20mg and 40mg strengths
Works different from other offer acid reflux medications such as proton pump inhibitors, providing an alternate treatment option
Famotidine tablets can be taken by adults aged 18 years and over, who need treatment for conditions caused by excessive stomach acid. This includes for gastro oesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux or GORD) to treat erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome or to help to heal ulcers.
Whilst famotidine tablets can safely be taken by most people, they must not be taken by anyone who is allergic to famotidine or other H2 receptor blockers.
Signs of a severe allergic reaction include swelling of the throat or tongue, difficulty breathing, wheezing or coughing, blue or pale skin, lips or tongue. If you think you are having a reaction whilst taking famotidine tablets, stop treatment and call 999. You may need to speak to your doctor for ongoing treatment requirements if it is confirmed you have an allergy to famotidine.
Although famotidine tablets are only minimally metabolised in the liver, they should not be used by individuals with severe liver problems. Famotidine is primarily excreted through the kidneys, so anyone with severe kidney disease or kidney problems may need a dose adjustment. Alternatively, they may need to stop treatment altogether and seek an alternate treatment such as proton pump inhibitors like lansoprazole or esomeprazole.
Any patients presenting with alarm symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood or persistent stomach pain must speak to their doctor before starting esomeprazole. These are signs of gastric cancer which need to be ruled out before starting treatment.
Patients who have a malignant tumour in their stomach should not use famotidine unless under direct medical supervision. The symptoms associated with gastric cancer are similar to the symptoms famotidine tablets are used to treat. For this reason, famotidine may mask the symptoms of cancer.
Are taking medicines such as:
Antifungal drugs (ketoconazole, itraconazole)
HIV treatments (atazanavir)
Blood thinners or NSAIDs
Have a history of stomach cancer or ulcers
Experience persistent symptoms that doesn't improve with treatment
Your pharmacist or doctor can advise on potential drug interactions with other medicines you may be taking.
The prescribed dose of famotidine will vary depending on what condition is being treated and its severity.
You should always follow instructions provided by your healthcare provider regarding your specific dose.
The typical dosing for adults is:
Famotidine 20mg twice daily for heartburn or to treat acid reflux
Famotidine 40mg once daily for ulcer treatment (often at bedtime)
Famotidine tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. They can be taken with or without food although taking with food may help reduce a stomach upset.
If you miss a dose of famotidine tablets, take it as soon as you remember unless its nearly time for your next dose. You should never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Famotidine works relatively quickly compared to other acid reducing medications.
Relief of symptoms from too much stomach acid can start within one hour. Maximum acid reduction is usually reached within 2–3 hours. The effects of just a single dose of famotidine can last for up to 12 hours.
For ulcers or chronic reflux, it may take 2–8 weeks for full healing. Therefore it's important to continue taking for as long as prescribed even if symptoms improve.
These side effects are usually mild and improve as your body adjusts to the medication.
Nausea or vomiting
Stomach pain
Skin rash or itching
Unusual tiredness
Swelling of the face or throat (possible allergic reaction)
Confusion or hallucinations
Yellowing of the skin or eyes – may indicate liver problems
If you experience difficulty breathing, chest tightness, severe rash, or swelling of the face, throat or tongue, seek medical help immediately as this may indicate a severe allergic reaction.
Contact your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen after two weeks of treatment.
To get the most benefit from famotidine and avoid worsening your symptoms :
Avoid smoking, alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine and fatty meals which can trigger acid reflux
Avoid taking antacids within 1–2 hours of Famotidine unless advised
Check with your doctor before combining with other acid-suppressing medicines (e.g. omeprazole or pantoprazole)
Famotidine is a H2 receptor blocker which works by reducing the acid the stomach produces while famotidine alternatives like omeprazole or pantoprazole (PPIs) block the proton pumps in the stomach that produce acid.
Famotidine provides faster symptom relief, often within an hour whereas PPIs generally take longer to start working but provide stronger acid suppression.
Famotidine is generally used for short term or intermittent symptoms whereas PPIs are usually used for long-term management of severe reflux or ulcers.
Some patients use both under medical supervision for complete acid control.
