Weight Loss
Wegovy tablets are a new formulation of the popular weight loss injection of the same name. Whilst both contain semaglutide and work the same way, the tablets offer a different approach to weight loss, eliminating the need for injecting.
These tablets are taken every day, compared to the injections which are administered once weekly.
As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, semaglutide mimics a naturally occurring hormone in the body, glucagon- like peptide-1(GLP-1).
This hormone plays a role in suppressing appetite, slowing digestion and regulating blood sugars - making you feel fuller, quicker, for longer. This supports a reduced calorie intake and thus weight loss.
Both the Wegovy pills and injections deliver semaglutide to help achieve significant and meaningful weight loss.
Take one tablet daily in the morning.
Don’t cut, crush or chew the tablet - it should be swallowed whole.
The tablet needs to be taken on an empty stomach after overnight fasting.
Swallow the tablet with a small amount of plain water (up to 120ml).
Wait at least 30 minutes after taking the Wegovy tablet before eating, drinking (even more plain water), or taking other medications
The important part to remember is the fasting routine. If any food, drink (including tea, coffee, water) or other oral medications are consumed within 30 minutes of taking the tablet, this can affect how well the medication is absorbed, impacting its effectiveness.
Feature | ||
|---|---|---|
Method of administration | Oral tablet | Subcutaneous Injection |
Dose frequency | One to be taken daily in the morning | One full dose injected once weekly |
Maximum dose | 25mg daily | 7.2mg weekly |
Dose titration | Increased if needed every 30 days | Increased if needed every 28 days |
Effectiveness | 16.6% average weight loss after 64 weeks (25mg) | 14.9% average weight loss after 68 weeks (2.4mg) |
Both formulations have been proven to help produce weight loss. Data from clinical trials show:
Wegovy tablets at 25mg, result in average weight loss of 16.6%
Wegovy injections at 2.4mg, result in average weight loss of 14.9%
The recently approved higher injection dose of 7.2mg has additionally shown an average weight loss of 20.7%.
In all trials, all participants followed a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity levels.
This data suggests weight loss is significant on both the tablets and injections, but can be dependent on consistency to treatment and lifestyle modifications.
As both treatments contain semaglutide and work in the same way on the body, most of the side effects overlap between both. The most common side effects for both the injection and the tablet are gastrointestinal side effects:
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhoea or constipation
Stomach pain or bloating
Heartburn or acid reflux
Fatigue
Mild headaches.
Side effects unique to the tablets include:
More frequent (mild) nausea. As the tablets are taken more frequently, patients report a mild episode of nausea shortly after each dose.
Stomach irritation.
Always read the leaflet and side effect information for a full list of potential side effects before starting any new medication.
Most side effects occur during the early weeks of dose initiation and escalation.
Symptoms usually settle once you have spent a few weeks on the same dose, or once you reach the maintenance dose, which is why the schedule steps up gradually.
Wegovy side effects can last from a few days to a few weeks, and usually improve as your body gets used to the medication. They are most common when you first start Wegovy and after a dose increase.
Most Wegovy side effects can be managed at home by:
Eating smaller, more frequent meals.
Getting enough rest.
Taking over-the-counter painkillers for headaches or mild stomach discomfort.
Eating plain, bland foods, like rice and crackers.
Focusing on a low starch/flour dense diet.
Drinking plenty of water.
Reduce acidic/spicy/oily foods.
Reduce alcohol intake or maintain it within sensible limits.
While uncommon, more serious side effects require immediate medical attention. These include:
Gallstones: Signs include severe abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right area.
Acute pancreatitis: Symptoms include severe abdominal pain that radiates to the back, along with nausea and vomiting.
Severe allergic reactions: Including difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, and severe rash.
Kidney problems: Particularly in those with existing kidney conditions.
Patients should contact their GP, call NHS 111 or speak to one of our healthcare professionals promptly if they experience any concerning symptoms. This monitoring ensures that Wegovy is used safely alongside lifestyle modifications for weight management.
The biggest difference between the Wegovy tablet and injection is the daily dosing and fasting requirement. You should swallow one tablet whole with plain water, on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. Ideally with just a few sips of water. Do not crush, split, or chew the tablets.
You should wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink, or take other tablets. Getting this right matters as each time you break the 30-minute fasting window, less of the drug is absorbed. Therefore, having a solid routine is necessary to optimise your weight loss potential through ensuring appropriate efficacy of the Wegovy tablet formulation.
The Wegovy injection works on a weekly dosing schedule instead. You inject once a week into the stomach, thigh, or upper arm using a pre-filled pen.
The injection has no fasting rules and can be used at any time of day. Rotate the injection site each week to reduce the risk of skin irritation. Pick a day that works for you and stick to it.
For anyone weighing up Wegovy pen vs tablet, the real question is which routine you can keep up with.
Ultimately the preference between both formulations depends on individual choice.
For those who want a less invasive option then the oral tablet will likely be ideal. The tablet formulation does not require the use of needles for injectable administration, the need for strict technique administration review and is easier to travel with.
Whereas for those who want to gradually move to the highest possible dose and may struggle with consistency for daily morning dosing, then the injection will be their formulation of choice.
The Wegovy pill is now approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). It is possible to switch from the injection to the tablets however we would always advise speaking to your clinician first.
Wegovy is the only GLP-1 weight loss medication with a published switching protocol from its manufacturer, Novo Nordisk. They report that the 2.4mg injectable version is equivalent to the 25mg oral tablet.
To switch:
Speak to your provider for advice on which dose to start on. This depends on what dose of the injection you are currently taking and how well you have tolerated it.
Start taking the tablets one week after your last injection.
Whilst the 2.4mg injection to 25mg switch is officially documented in guidance, this does not mean you cannot switch at lower doses.
See below for a guide on equivalence doses across all strengths. Remember to always consult your prescriber before switching.
Wegovy Injection Dose | Wegovy Pill Dose |
|---|---|
7.2mg or 2.4mg | 25mg |
1mg or 1.7mg | 9mg |
0.5mg | 4mg |
0.25mg | 1.5mg |
For those new to Wegovy, the dose should be built up from the lowest initiation dose (1.5mg) taken for a minimum of 30 days before escalating if needed.
Days | Dose | Phase |
|---|---|---|
Days 1 to 30 | 1.5mg once daily | Starting dose |
Days 31 to 60 | 4mg once daily | Escalation |
Days 61 to 90 | 9mg once daily | Escalation |
Day 91 onwards | 25mg once daily | Maintenance dose |
You can switch directly from Wegovy injections to Wegovy pills. Which strength you switch to will depend on what dose you are currently taking.
The switch in practice: one week after your final Wegovy injection, you start the Wegovy pill once daily.
The fasting routine catches more people out than the medication change itself.

Everything you need to know
Whilst both preparations contain semaglutide and work in the same way, the tablets are taken as a once-daily pill whereas the injection is administered once weekly.
Yes, both forms offer significant weight loss results:
Wegovy 25mg tablet - an average 16.6% weight loss over 64 weeks.
Wegovy 2.4mg injection - an average of 14.9% weight loss over 68 weeks.
Wegovy 7.2mg injection - an average of 20.7% weight loss over 72 weeks.
To ensure optimal absorption:
Take one tablet in the morning on an empty stomach after overnight fasting.
Swallow the tablets whole, with a small sip of plain water (no more than 120ml)
Do not cut, crush or chew the tablet.
Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medication.
Having food, tea, coffee or even excess water within 30 minutes of taking the Wegovy pill affects how well it’s absorbed into the body. This can reduce its effectiveness, making appetite control much less successful.
Yes, Wegovy is currently the only GLP-1 treatment with a manufacturer-approved switching protocol. One week after your final injection, you begin your equivalent tablet dose daily. Always consult your prescriber before making any dosage adjustments or switches.
Current Wegovy Injection Dose | Equivalent Tablet Dose |
|---|---|
0.25mg | 1.5mg |
0.5mg | 4mg |
1mg or 1.7mg | 9mg |
2.4mg or 7.2mg | 25mg |
Both forms carry a risk of the same side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and fatigue. The tablets however, carry a slightly higher risk of stomach irritation as they travel through the body.
