Metronidazole gel - for those who prefer a local treatment, or are more likely to experience gastric side effects from oral tablets, metronidazole gel 0.75% is an effective alternative. One applicatorful (5g) of gel is inserted high into the vagina once daily at night for 5 consecutive days.

How Long Does Metronidazole Take to Clear BV?

Most women notice an improvement in symptoms within 2 to 3 days of starting the antibiotics. The first symptoms to disappear are the fishy odour and abnormal discharge.

Importantly, even if you feel better, it's crucial that you finish the entire prescribed course. This makes sure all the bacteria are killed. Even if a small number survive, they can cause the infection to return and increase the risk of the bacteria becoming resistant to the antibiotic.

What Are the Side Effects of Metronidazole for BV?

Like all medication, metronidazole can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them.

The most common side effects are:

• A metallic taste in the mouth.

• Nausea.

• Mild stomach upset.

• Loss of appetite.

• Dark red-brown urine (harmless).

Metronidazole and Alcohol

Metronidazole interacts with alcohol, causing a ‘disulfiram-like reaction’. Consuming even a small amount of alcohol whilst on metronidazole treatment can result in:

• Intense nausea.

• Vomiting.

• Flushing.

• Headaches.

• Rapid heart rate.
