Migraine
Yes, Vydura was approved for use in the NHS by NICE in 2023 though this does not guarantee access.
To get Vydura on the NHS for migraine prevention, patients must experience at least 4 migraine days per month and have already tried 3 other preventative treatments which failed.
Additionally, Vydura is not nationally rolled out. Access varies by each area as each region, known as an ICB may have funding restrictions, or different NHS priorities, creating a ‘postcode lottery’ for patients. For this reason, Vydura may be more accessible through private clinics such as Quick Meds.
NICE TA906 established Vydura as the first oral -gepant available on the NHS. As per this guideline, patients can obtain Vydura as a treatment to prevent migraines if they:
Experience episodic migraines (between 4 and 15 migraine attacks per month)
Have tried at least 3 preventative medications (topiramate, amitriptyline or propranolol) which have not worked, or were not tolerated
Whilst the guidelines allow GPs to initiate Vydura in some areas, it is more commonly initiated by a neurologist or a specialist headache clinic.
Patients explicitly excluded are those who experience chronic migraines (more than 15 per month) and for those who are intending to use Vydura to treat an active attack. Whilst approved for acute treatment, use is restricted to patients who have failed triptan medications.
To get Vydura on the NHS, there are a number of steps to take:
Step 1 - Track your migraine days. Vydura is licensed for those who experience between 4 and 15 migraines a month. Keeping a migraine diary can help keep a track of your migraines and prove you meet this requirement.
Step 2 - Discuss with your GP. Bring your diary and a list of failed medicines with you when you discuss with your GP. Remember, another criteria to meet is that you have tried at least 3 preventative treatments in the past which have either not worked or you did not tolerate.
Step 3 - Neurology referral. If you meet the criteria but your GP is unable to prescribe Vydura for you themselves (based on the area you are in), you may be referred to a neurologist or specialist headache clinic who can.
Step 4 - Assessment. A specialist will review your history and, if eligible, will issue the first Vydura prescription. Whilst a follow-up may be initially required, once stable your GP should then be able to continue prescribing going forward.
Across 95 NHS hospitals, average waiting times to see a neurologist is about 15 weeks. As of 2026, over 4,000 patients have been waiting for more than 52 weeks.
Long NHS wait times lead most patients to access Vydura from online pharmacies on a private prescription. Here at Quick Meds, we offer Vydura to all eligible patients.
Whilst on the NHS, you are required to have tried other medication first, when accessing privately, the main criteria to meet is having an established migraine diagnosis. This helps online clinics prescribe safely - a confirmed diagnosis ensures clinicians have not missed signs of a more serious illness.
The greatest advantage is speed. You can often receive Vydura as soon as the next working day, bypassing long NHS waiting times.
The difference when obtaining treatment privately is the price. On the NHS, unless exempt from charges, Vydura costs the standard £9.90 per prescription. When obtaining privately, prices are generally higher, factoring the cost of the drug and consultation fees.
Despite the higher cost, Vydura’s effectiveness and quicker access makes it the route of choice for those seeking immediate relief.
At Quick Meds, Vydura prices are, as of March 2026:
Pack Size | Cost per pack | Price per dose |
|---|---|---|
Two pack | £44.95 | £22 |
Eight pack | £140.95 | £17.50 |
Sixteen pack | £275.95 | £17 |
For those who frequently suffer, or are using Vyudura as a preventative, the larger pack sizes offer the more financially viable option. Whilst the pack itself attracts a higher cost, the average cost per dose is lower.
From a clinical point of view, the higher cost is justified as it lacks the ‘rebound headache’ associated with other treatments and can safely be used by patients with established heart disease.
If you are looking for another option, or simply don’t meet the strict NHS criteria for Vydura, the NHS offers other pathways for managing refractory migraine. These are migraines that haven’t responded to standard treatments.
Triptan medicines, like sumatriptan, rizatriptan, and zolmitriptan have long been the gold standard for acute migraine relief. These are widely available and very low-cost.
Whilst effective, they can cause rebound headaches if used more than 10 days a month. Additionally, due to their action on constricting blood vessels, they cannot be used by patients who suffer from heart conditions.
These treatments are available on the NHS as an injection for the prevention of migraine. Usually administered once monthly, all except one (vyepti) can be self-administered at home and are useful for those who require a fast-acting treatment.
Like Vydura, these injections are often restricted to those who suffer from chronic migraine and require a neurologist to initiate treatment. Based on this, the same waiting time applies as with Vydura.
Everything you need to know
Yes, Vydura is available on the NHS for both preventing migraines and treating an active attack. To obtain treatment, there is a strict NHS criteria which must be met and treatment is usually initiated by a neurologist.
Most often, GPs cannot start you on Vydura directly. You’ll first need to show that two triptan medicines haven’t worked for you, following which your GP can then refer you to a specialist who can officially prescribe it. Bringing a migraine diary to your appointment can help prove you meet the NHS criteria for treatment.
The NICE criteria depends on if you want to use Vydura as an active treatment or as a preventative:
For Prevention - You must have between 4-15 migraine days per month AND have failed at least 3 other preventative treatments.
For Acute treatment - you must have tried at least 2 triptans which either didn’t work or were unsafe for you.
When obtained privately, Vydura costs between £40-£300 per pack or up to £22 per single dose.
Yes but only through regulated online pharmacies. When obtaining privately, you don’t need to meet the strict NHS criteria but will still need to have an online consultation.
Usually, online providers will only prescribe Vydura following a formal migraine diagnosis from your GP.
