What is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is an effective, non-drowsy anti-histamine used to treat the symptoms of hay fever (also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis), hives (itchy skin) and other allergies.

The active ingredient is Fexofenadine hydrochloride and is formulated as a tablet; available in both 120mg and 180mg strengths.

This treatment belongs to a class of treatments known as ‘anti-histamines’. Histamine is a natural substance that the body produces when you are exposed an allergen.

Allergens can include pollen, dust, perfumes, chemical substances, foods and any other substance which triggers an allergic response.

How does fexofenadine work?

When we are exposed to an allergen or substance we are allergic to, the body responds by releasing a chemical called histamine.

Histamine binds to histamine receptors in your body which then triggers the main symptoms of allergies and hayfever:

  • Runny nose
  • Itchy nose
  • Sore eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy skin
  • Hives (raised, red skin rash)

You can use fexofenadine to treat reactions to insect stings and bites too.

Fexofenadine isn’t suitable for everyone, if any of the below apply to you:

    • Liver or kidney problems
    • History of heart disease or heart problems/conditions
    • A health condition, or history of a health condition which could put you a risk of fits or seizures such as epilepsy.
    • Allergy to fexofenadine or any of its excipients.

What if fexofenadine isn’t working?

Should you find that fexofenadine 120mg is not helping with your symptoms of allergic rhinitis, speak to your doctor pharmacist for further advice.

Often with seasonal allergic rhinitis, it is necessary to tackle the symptoms using local applications of nose sprays and eye drops.

Contact Quick Meds to see how we can help with further options.

Some of the products available are:

      • Beconase (beclomethasone)
      • Dymista (Azelastine/fluticasone)
      • Nasonex (mometasone)
      • Flixonase (fluticasone)
      • Avamys (fluticasone furoate)
      • Opticrom (sodium cromoglicate) – eye drops

What if I take too much?

If you think you have taken too much fexofenadine, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Fexofenadine is generally quite safe and an accidental additional dose in any 24 hour period is unlikely to cause any harm; however, you should still contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Will fexofenadine make me drowsy?

Fexofenadine is a non-drowsy antihistamine and is not likely to make you feel drowsy.

However, medications affect different people in different ways; some patients may find some slight drowsiness but the majority will not.

If you are worried about drowsiness caused by fexofenadine you should take a tablet on a day preceding another day where you won’t be required to drive e.g. on a Friday evening. You can then assess the response and if you feel well, you can continue to take it regularly for your symptoms.

How to take

 How to take fexofenadine tablets?

Fexofenadine tablets come in three different strengths:

  • 30mg – licensed for us in patients aged 6-11yrs for seasonal allergic rhinitis.
  • 120mg – licensed for use in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • 180mg – not licensed for seasonal allergic rhinitis but often prescribed when 120mg

Fexofenadine 120mg tablets are prescribed for hay fever and allergies and are taken once daily – you can take fexofenadine 120mg as long as you feel you may be exposed to the particular allergen e.g. throughout the pollen season (February – October for most pollens).

Fexofenadine 180mg tablets are prescribed for hives or itchy skin which persists for six weeks or more. It can be prescribed ‘off-label’ for use in hay fever / seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Always follow your healthcare professionals instructions on how to take fexofenadine tablets.

The usual dose of each tablet is once daily. Try to take it at the same time of day each day and avoid drinking fruit juices such as orange/grapefruit at the same time or within 2 hours of taking fexofenadine as this can reduce the absorption and effectiveness of Fexofenadine.
