Dymista Nasal Spray
Dymista Nasal Spray is a dual action nasal spray used to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) such as a blocked, runny or itchy nose or sneezing where over the counter steroid nasal sprays and/or antihistamines are not sufficient in managing symptoms.
Allergic rhinitis is the bodies inflammatory reaction to allergens such as dust, pollen or pet dander. When the allergen enters the body and binds to cells in the individuals nasal passages which are sensitive to these allergens, they trigger the release of a chemical called ‘histamine’.
Histamine is responsible for the symptoms you experience when you are suffering from allergic rhinitis; by causing inflammation, irritation and swelling the symptoms of a blocked, runny or itchy nose, sneezing and possibly skin reactions will occur.
Where symptoms occur all year round, this is known as ‘perennial rhinitis’ and the typical allergens will be those that are present all year around such as house dust mites and pet dander. If your symptoms are only seasonal, this is known as ‘seasonal allergic rhinitis’ and typical allergens may include plant, tree and grass pollens.
Dymista contains two ingredients (Azelastine and Fluticasone) which have separate functions – combined they provide effective relief from the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
Azelastine has anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory and mast-cell stabilising action whereas fluticasone is an inhaled nasal steroid with anti-inflammatory properties as well as inhibiting the action of multiple cell types which are involved in the allergic response. Fluticasone is effective topically and has negligible systemic absorption.
When Dymista with its combined ingredients is administered directly to the nasal passages, relief of symptoms can occur as quickly as 5 minutes from administration.
Dymista nasal spray is safe for long term use, including year-round for patients who are susceptible to allergens such as house dust mites and pet dander and has been shown to be superior to nasal sprays which contain only corticosteroids.
How to use
1. Shake the bottle gently for 5 seconds by tilting it upwards and downwards and then remove the protective cap.
2. The first time the nasal spray is used, you must prime the pump:
- Put one finger either side of the spray pump and place your thumb on the bottom of the bottle.
- Press down and release the pump 6 times until a fine mist appears.
- Now your pump is primed and ready to use.
- If the nasal spray has not been used for more than 7 days, you will need to re-prime the pump once by pressing down and releasing the pump.
3 Using the spray:
- After blowing your nose, spray once into each nostril keeping the head tilted downward (see video).
- The spray tip should be directed to the outside wall of the nose, using the right hand for the left nostril and the left hand for the right nostril.
- Do not sniff; breathe in gently.
- After use, wipe the spray tip and replace the protective cap.
