Omeprazole is a medication which reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach; it achieves this by directly inhibiting the cells in your stomach which are responsible for producing stomach acid.
It is used to treat a number of conditions related to the excess production of stomach acid including indigestion, acid reflux and heartburn.
The most common symptoms of acid reflux/heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest (behind the breast bone) and an unpleasant, sour taste in the mouth. This is caused by excess stomach acid travelling up the food pipe (oesophagus) to the throat. Where heartburn/acid reflux becomes a chronic (long term) ailment it is known as ‘Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease’ (GERD or GORD).
Indigestion is the name given to a collection of symptoms including pain, discomfort, acid reflux and bloating in the stomach associated with difficulty digesting food.
There are some more serious conditions where acid reflux can be a symptom and it is important you seek medical attention via your GP if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent acid reflux which doesn’t respond to omeprazole
- Unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, frequent vomiting
- Bringing up blood in your vomit or passing blood in your stool (stool will be a rusty colour)
- You are otherwise concerned about your symptoms.
How to Take
Take One capsule with half a glass of water, on an empty stomach 30 minutes before any food or other medication.
The usual dose of omeprazole is 10-20mg once daily.
Side effects
As with any medication Omeprazole can cause side effects in some people – although not everyone will experience these.
Before taking Omeprazole it is important to familiarise yourself with the patient information leaflet included with your order. If you have any queries or would like to discuss any aspects of the leaflet please do not hesitate to get in touch with Quick Meds where one of our pharmacists will be happy to help.
If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking Omeprazole and contact a doctor immediately:
- Sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue and throat or body, rash, fainting or difficulties in swallowing (severe allergic reaction)
- Reddening of the skin with blisters or peeling. There may also be severe blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals. This could be ‘Stevens-Johnson syndrome’ or ‘toxic epidermal necrolysis’
- Yellow skin, dark urine and tiredness which can be symptoms of liver problems
Other side effects include:
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
- headache
- effects on your stomach or gut: diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, wind (flatulence)
- feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
- benign polyps in the stomach
Omeprazole may in very rare cases affect the white blood cells leading to immune deficiency. If you have an infection with symptoms such as fever with a severely reduced general condition or fever with symptoms of a local infection such as pain in the neck, throat or mouth or difficulties in urinating, you must consult your doctor as soon as possible so that a lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis) can be ruled out by a blood test. It is important for you to give information about your medicine at this time.
For a complete list of side effects please consult the information leaflet included with your order.
Cautions & Warnings
Do not take Omeprazole:
- if you are allergic to omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (See the patient information leaflet enclosed with your order)
- if you are allergic to medicines containing other proton pump inhibitors (e.g. pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole)
- if you are taking a medicine containing nelfinavir (used for HIV infection).
Do not take Omeprazole if any of the above apply to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Omeprazole.
Omeprazole may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking Omeprazole or while you are taking it, talk to your doctor straight away:
- you lose a lot of weight for no reason and have problems swallowing
- you get stomach pain or indigestion
- you begin to vomit food or blood
- you pass black stools (blood-stained faeces)
- you experience severe or persistent diarrhoea, as omeprazole has been associated with a small increase in infectious diarrhoea
- you have severe liver problems
- if you have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a medicine similar to Omeprazole that reduces stomach acid
- you are due to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).

There is a myriad of lifestyle changes you can make to help improve symptoms, these centre around reducing the risk factors for acid reflux and some practical tips
- Eat smaller meals
- Reduce your consumption of rich, spicy, oily food
- Try not to eat 3 hours before you retire for bed
- Lose any excess weight
- Life the head of your bed by a few inches (you can achieve this by placing a pillow beneath your mattress) so your chest is above the level of your waist.
Although it is safe to take omeprazole long term, it can have effects on your overall health including impacting your bone density and fracture risk.
You should always make sure your GP is aware of any medication you are taking to ensure they have all of the required information for continuity of care and reduce the risk of inadvertently prescribing a high risk combination of medication.
A typical course length is 4-8 weeks. If your symptoms are persisting past this then please contact one of the pharmacists at Quick Meds who would be more than happy to help.
The best time of day to take your omeprazole is 30 minutes before any other food or medication in the morning.
This allows the omeprazole to get to work and limit the amount of acid your stomach will produce; thus reducing the frequency of symptoms.
You should start to notice results within 24-48 hours.
If your symptoms have not improve after two weeks please seek further support. You can either contact one of the pharmacists at Quick Meds or your GP.
Omeprazole belongs to a family of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s)
PPI’s work by stopping (or inhibiting) certain cells which line your stomach that are responsible for producing and pumping acid into the stomach. When these cells are effectively inhibited before the consumption of a meal, the amount of stomach acid produced is lower and as such the risk of having an excess amount of acid travel up the oesophagus is reduced thus reducing symptoms.
